Some Mallards will do anything for free food and a bit of attention. Even go eye-to-eye with the photographer. This bold drake had no problems flying up to the first lookout, and waiting for the smartphones and digital cameras to converge. Knowing his eventual reward, the subject stayed still through every shot. I took this photo at the George C. Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary in Delta, BC. Located in the Fraser River, this 340-hectare sanctuary–which turns 50 this year–is one of Canada’s top bird-watching sites and home to 250 species of waterfowl, including resident sites for birds that nest all year round like Sandhill Cranes–which you may even get to feed by hand.
