Weekly Photo Challenge: Grand

A monkey puzzle tree, shot from ground level at Van Dusen Gardens in Vancouver. Although it is considered endangered, this hardy Chilean expatriate grows well in other parts of the world and is a conifer that scientists consider a living fossil because of its great age (the oldest one has been documented at 170 years). Its seeds–barely visible at the very top–are edible, even by humans.

Monkey puzzle trees have been spotted in Metro Vancouver on private residences and in public gardens, although nowhere near their stated maximum height of 40 metres.
