Umm, The Beach is That Way

Acquiring a 33 lb bag of premium birdseed feed from Costco sure gets noticed quickly in the neighbourhood. Normally (completely!) a bird of the beaches, this Wilson’s Snipe made a very rare, “unscheduled” appearance in the backyard. Shot at maximum zoom on the second floor, a good 50 feet away. It either hadn’t gotten the directions to the beach, or the last day and a half of a cold snap–which has partially frozen the waters–has made digging around for food challenging.

Short-Billed Dowitcher

This shorebird stayed only for a short while, and would have been completely camouflaged thanks to the combination of its speckled brown plumage, decaying leaves, and fallen pinecones and branches on the ground, had I not noted it coming in for a landing.
