It’s a Dinner and uh, a Date

It seems that spring fever has caught even these Dance Flies. I don’t think I will ever be able to eat a blackcurrant again without thinking of frisky flies. That black mess (which is probably a dead fly) that you see in the grasp of the female is probably food brought by the male.

  1. Cool! You have the behaviour figured out entirely correctly. These are Dance Flies (Family Empididae). The male brings the female a prey item as an offering (a “nuptial gift”) and the male mates while the female is occupied with the gift.
