This gallery contains 3 photos. Actually, they’re Saw-Whet Owls. But Snoopy is very sweet. A permanent resident of O.W.L., we first encountered this tiny guy in the office, thinking that given his size and motionlessness, that Snoopy was a stuffed animal (sitting on the next desk was a stuffed Snowy Owl). But as it quickly turned out … most definitely not! 🙂
This Saw-Whet Owl winked a lot (no, that is not the same as the one in the photo above, but the name and gender escape me). Yes, that is its lunch in the lower left corner. I’d imagine that this is a sterilized rat, but the intended diner doesn’t seem to be all that interested in what appears to be an all-you-can-eat (AYCE) lunch.
S/he must be either camera shy, or the summer heat is really wearing — even on such a small creature! Saw-Whet Owls are second in smallness of size only to the Pygmy Owl, and top the scales at an underwhelming 100 grams. These are full-sized adults and not baby owls or owlets. 😀
