A Red Hot Poker Plant!

This gallery contains 3 photos. Kniphofia positively drips nectar from late spring through to mid summer … making it irresistible to hummingbirds and bees (and speaking of the latter, they did show up to feed, but without my long lens, my photos of that particular activity are too small to post). Photographed at the UBC Botanical Garden on June 7.

Some variations of the torch lily (another alias) are pure yellow. This may be the Bees’ Sunset or Brimstone Bloom cultivar.

But the red, orange, and yellow gradient (fiery coloured Kniphofia) of this African native is a more familiar sight in Vancouver. We did get a small pot of Kniphofia in mid-August, but I think we’ll have to wait until next spring to see the blooms!
