This gallery contains 2 photos. After a few brief and timid cameos earlier this summer, the red-breasted nuthatches have suddenly started showing up in pairs, swiping the sunflower seeds and stuffing them, rather hilariously, in the oddest of places (window ledges, under the eaves of the house, and even extendable aluminum ladders). Photographed on September 28.
They’re even kicking the chickadees off (the worm finally turns!) In less than a day, the joint raids of the chickadees and nuthatches have resulted in a more than a 50% drop in the sunflower dispenser, which was re-filled to the brim in the late morning.
