Wildlife Up Close: Ostrich

This gallery contains 2 photos. A head/profile shot of the biggest extant bird in the world, taken with my long lens. Everything about this bird is big: including its egg, beak, eye, feet, and feathers. It’s also the fastest bird on land, although we (thankfully) did not see it tearing around at 70 km/h. The ostrich enclosure was located just beside the bleachers for the raptor show.

Shot from a distance with a superzoom/non-DSLR digital camera is a “closeup” of the feathers and powerful legs. Did you know that ostrich meat, like kangaroo meat, is extremely lean (2% body fat, zero carbs) but does not taste stringy, and as a matter of fact has a very delicate flavor?
