Wildlife Up Close: Zebras

This gallery contains 2 photos. The cousins of horses and donkeys, zebras are also extremely social animals that live in groups for safety. We saw between 4-8 zebras in their enclosure on September 14 at the Greater Vancouver Zoo.

Why do these equids have stripes? One theory is that they make the wearer less appetizing to flies. No two zebras have the same black stripes — compare the two zebras grazing below. It’s like fingerprints — distinctive for each individual.
