Sooty Fox Sparrow in the Pear Tree

Looking majestic in the pear tree is this large red-and-rusty-brown sparrow, surveying the back yard below on a chilly day. When it’s not in the trees, the Sooty Fox Sparrow is on the ground, flipping over leaf litter, or pinching seeds from the seed bowl. Although a common sight in the fall and winter on the Pacific Coast, these birds tend to be solo acts. Photographed December 3.
