This gallery contains 2 photos. Nothing steals the crown of cuteness from Chickadees like these kinglet-sized birds. It’s pure neoteny at work when they flash you those heart-melting stares. A small, all-male flock of Bushtits arrived on the front lawn California Lilac bush in the mid-afternoon — perhaps looking for a few seeds to nibble.
Taking my chances that they wouldn’t all dart off at once (like the ladies did), I ran outside and snapped a few photos from a few feet away. Although a group photo wasn’t possible (they were alternately popping up like groundhogs), I did manage to get some closeups–like this one doing the splits on the California Lilac–where the light worked in my favour. Photographed on March 6.
