Return of the Shovelers

This gallery contains 2 photos. Having a swim in their “private” pond next to the Sandhill Cranes at the Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary is a breeding pair of Northern Shovelers. This is the first time in almost a year that I’ve been able to get close to these ducks. Usually they’re found in the very remote ponds. Photographed on February 8.

One of eight Northern Shovelers who had staked out one of the inner ponds at the Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary. This fellow was constantly dabbling, so to get a photo of him with his head out of the water, I had to photograph him immediately after he surfaced.
