I Like Your White Booties!

Taken from about 30 feet away on the second floor sunroom on April 23 is the first Rufous hummingbird (probably a female) that I’ve managed to photograph in our backyard with any degree of clarity. Both this one and an adult Rufous male (reddish-brown feathers with orange gorget) were seen in this area at the same time — but only for a few heartbeats. Rufouses are the feistiest (and smallest) hummers to visit the West Coast in the spring and summer.

    • thank you! 🙂 with her red-and-green plumage, the female Rufous is one of the more colourful female hummingbirds we’ll see in the Northern Hemisphere. I think she even outshines the male of her species, who is reddish brown with a brilliant orange gorget.
