Caught Red-Handed/Throated

I almost managed to snap a closeup of this male Rufous Hummingbird unawares (he was perfectly positioned in this low defoliated and deflowered shrub facing the South Marsh, just a few feet from my parked car), but his keen sense of observation thwarted me. Oh so close! Iona Island positively rings with the zinging of these feisty little hummers; they seem to outnumber and “outnoise” even their larger cousins, the Anna’s. Photographed on May 17.

      • actually, it will be more photos of the male (the males are stunning, too) and female Anna’s hummingbirds in the next three days. 🙂

I will do a post at the end of the week about building hummingbird-friendly gardens, and that one will feature photos of Rufous hummingbirds feeding in my backyard. 🙂
