This gallery contains 3 photos. I’ve only met the Blue-Winged Teals this year … the first one at Iona Island, followed by 9 at Reifel, and 4 more at Piper Spit; each encounter brought me progressively closer to these summering migrants! This last set was photographed at Burnaby Lake on May 31.
a good shot of the blue feathers for which the Blue-Winged teal is named.

Like their Gadwall counterparts, Blue-Winged Teal drakes dress conservatively for their women. No flashy feathers are necessary (except for that solitary white stripe between their eyes and bills) — just plenty of personality!
even without flashy feathers and colours, this is one photogenic pair!

However, after these chance closeup encounters at Burnaby Lake, I have not seen any more Blue-Winged Teals elsewhere in Metro Vancouver. These tiny dabblers and long-distant migrants spend their winters in Central and South America, and they are often the first duck species to head south.
look at that cute little questioning face!

You caught the reasons why ducks are so well loved. They seem to have a permanent smile.

“Dress conservatively for their women…” Hah! You crack me up! Thank you for my Thursday bit of beauty! Ducks are some of my favorite birds…for watching and eating. 😉

I rarely eat duck! can’t say the same for chicken, though. 🙂

I think my addiction to duck is a Chinese thing. :} It is my favorite meat. They’re seriously hard to pluck or I’d raise some (we butcher our own chickens).
Poor little teals…don’t worry; I won’t eat you! LOL!

oh yes, I am very well acquainted with eating crispy skin duck growing up! 😀

the unhealthy fat and the crispiness make BBQ duck taste soooo good 🙂 … although a few years ago, I was up at Whistler for a daycation (if that’s a word 🙂 ) and we had Black and Blue Duck at the Monk’s Grill (now closed, unfortunately 😦 ). it tasted great, but there wasn’t an ounce of fat on it!!

Alton Brown called duck fat “liquid gold”…I can’t imagine it tasting as good without fat, and I guess I’ll never be able to find out. Dang!

liquid gold is definitely a colourful metaphor! 😀
PS. sorry to hear about your soaked keyboard. 😉 but now you have an excuse to get a new one!! 😀

It’s awful how computers go obsolete so quickly! It’s really not too far fetched for me to want a new computer, although hubby will remind me that the one he’s using is even older. 😀

indeed! the pace of technological change is happening so fast that if you have a smartphone that is more than 3 years ago, it seems like it’s time to upgrade!

I echo your sentiments, Eliza. it is always special to see wildlife so near by. it’s like a compliment or sorts, that they find the photographer interesting enough to approach. 🙂

I’d like to think they can read our energy as benign, so their fear lessens. It may be fanciful, but then again, who knows? 😉

Hello my friend! Many apologies for my long silence. It’s been a hectic time here in Tokyo, and I’ve had to take care of some things. But in spite of everything, I’ve made it a point to always keep up with your amazing photography. As always, thank you so much for sharing the beauty, and for the inspiration!
Warm wishes always,
Takami
