This flower was actually photographed in the great outdoors! The black background on this Japanese Iris was unintentional (“putting the subject under the spotlight”); I was so focused (no pun intended) on capturing all the parts of the flower that I didn’t realize that I hadn’t reset the aperture from the previous landscape photo.

Other aliases include Fringed Iris, Crested Iris, Iris Japonica, Shaga, or Butterfly Flower. This is a small and delicate looking but hardy Asian native that can grow quite well in North American climes, but it does have its share of nemeses, both meteorological and entomological. incredible image! great detail…how in the world did you capture this at 3200 ISO without any noise or distortion….bravo. The black background on the white flower is absolutely stunning.

thank you, Cindy! the Canon EOS 6D is quite good even at really high ISOs, even without flash. I was also at the closest minimum distance that my macro lens would allow me to be at … 0.3m … to get the subject to fill the frame (this is pretty much the uncropped image, albeit resized for WordPress). as a result, the lighting is quite good.

It’s such an intricately beautiful flower and you’ve captured it so well so we can all appreciate its intricacy! Hubby has a colleague who grows and sells irises in his spare time. He’ll probably enjoy this. 🙂

I almost missed seeing this iris as it is considerably smaller than “normal sized irises” (but not as small as small intergeneric irises can be).

Oh, no; hubby has no interest in growing anything that is not food (I can’t say I fault him for it…LOL!). He can’t understand why his colleague only grows flowers. 😉 I love the small irises because they’re more delicate. We only grow one iris and it’s a purple miniature…we put it in 17 years ago, back when hubby would still put effort into flowers. We’re getting old and lazy. 😀

We have native bee balms and other wildflowers for the hummers (and I do put out one nectar feeder, too) and let them fend for themselves. 😀 They are so fun to watch, though.

we have bee balms, too! but the anise hyssop is their favourite.
they are very entertaining, indeed! I watched our resident Anna’s hummingbird stalk and pounce on another young male Anna’s today when the “challenger” went to feed from the front lawn feeder (the resident hummer was actually hiding out in the California lilac bush where the nectar feeder is hung … pretty sneaky!!)
that makes three Anna’s today (the full grown Anna’s male with the pink crown also got chased out by the half-grown male earlier this morning). there is just no sharing with these guys! 😀
