This gallery contains 2 photos. A male Green-Winged Teal enjoys the calm waters of Piper Spit/Burnaby Lake. Only at Burnaby Lake can we see these diminutive dabbling ducks (the smallest in North America) literally (and quite fearlessly) at our feet, chasing ducks much bigger than themselves. Photographed on January 30.
on Golden Pond: this male Green-Winged Teal was photographed during a winter afternoon.
f/11, 1/500, 150-500mm telephoto lens, 500mm, ISO 1250
Admiring her reflection, divining her future, or looking for food? Almost perfectly camouflaged by her environment, this female Green-Winged Teal scans the waters of Piper Spit / Burnaby Lake. Except for her black beak and a green patch on her wing feathers, this lady could pass for a miniature Mallard hen.
just because the males are flashy doesn’t mean the females don’t have any sense of vanity.

wouldn’t have been possible anywhere else but at Burnaby Lake! these little ducks are usually way off in the distance in all the other parts of Metro Vancouver that I see ’em. 🙂

thank you, Chris! now I’ll just have to train all the other bird species to be this approachable … 😀

I dunno — I can think of many examples of your work where it seemed like you could talk to the birds !!!!!

oh, I can talk to the birds … only a few seem to LISTEN, though 😀 … for the rest, my chirps and cheeps might be all Greek to them! 😀

Great photos of these beautiful ducks, WH. Not only does the female blend in so well, the rust-colored reflections in the water are a wonderful complement to that stunning male’s colors!

I like the golden feathering effect too, and didn’t notice them until I reviewed that photo on my laptop! 😀

Beautiful!! I love the feathery background behind the handsome male, and the subtle colors around the female. Just like them.

thank you!
the “golden feathers” was a bit of unintentional bokeh behind the male as he floated on the pond! 😀

That male is so handsome, he’d be narcissistic if he had a good mirror! 😉 Lucky for us you have captured his incredible looks…and his cute but drab female counterpart. LOL!

thank you, Teresa! I have another shot of him posing in profile, and his head looks so round that it looks like he has a tennis ball for a head! 🙂

Screamingly beautiful! I mean it – I literally screamed silently in my head (it is late and I don’t want to alarm folks sleeping!) Not only the clarity of the duck, but the reflected ripples that almost look like feathers radiating outward. An outstanding image! 😀

Wow, your photos are stunning! Thank you so much for sharing. In particular, you captured the colours on the male so wonderfully. And the peek-a-boo stripe of green on the female is quite sweet.

I think that’s Mother Nature. 🙂 I was lucky to have the water rippling behind Mr. Green-Winged Teal like that. 🙂

Sure mother nature is beautiful, but you have a eye to capture its aura. Your pics are truly amazing.
