This gallery contains 2 photos. These berries are worth the risk! One of two female Purple Finches who ventured out to the outer walking trails of the Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary to quietly nibble at these delicious berries. My closest encounter with these birds (I’m 5-6 feet almost directly below this one)! Photographed on March 2.
she’s not the least bit concerned about the giant lens aimed straight up at her.

They were willing to brave the photographers almost directly underneath them, as well as larger [bird] predators (a female Northern Harrier circled the area frequently), not to mention the wind gusts today, just to eat. In light of the inclement weather, their preferred dining position looked like this:
birds assume the most interesting positions to eat berries (Purple Finches, most of all).

thank you for your kind words, Merry Hearts! 🙂 it is a privilege to photograph birds up close. 🙂

How do you manage to make birds even cuter than they are? I swear that top one is trying to talk to you/us!

when you get to photograph birds at really close ranges, you realize just how sweet they are. 🙂 🙂 🙂

The ones that allow me to come close are usually yelling at me for not putting enough seeds out or being in their way while they’re trying to eat. LOL! Silly birds!

it’s the black-capped chickadees who are really pushy … I get a chiding from them for being too slow. and the male Anna’s hummers have been zinging past my head a LOT more lately when I’m near the flowers!! 🙂

Hummers, for their diminutive sizes, are loud and demanding in their own ways! 😀 In addition to the chickadees, our white-breasted nuthatches and tufted titmice are also vocal in their disapproval and demands…darn birds! LOL!

our red-breasted nuthatches are soooo timid … only one has ever dared to “talk back” to me! 😀 seeing them at the feeders is like seeing Mission Impossible: get in and get out in three seconds!!

We almost never get red-breasted nuthatches here (I last saw one in our town in 1995!) so I sympathize with your frustration. :}

of course, if I happen to “meet” a nuthatch at the feeding station, it usually doesn’t skedaddle like the Black-Capped Chickadees do … until it has absconded with a seed! we usually engage in a staring contest first. 🙂

haha … I usually have my long lens on, which is useless at such close range. 🙂

thank you, Wanda! photographing wildlife is challenging even at the best of times, so I try to make sure I post only my personal bests. 🙂
