Bird species #138 on my life list was spotted making a very quiet, song-free “hop-fly-hop” circuit of my backyard from bush to tree to bush in the mid-morning hours of September 5, when the midsummer sun has a hard time piercing the collective shade of Douglas Firs. I chased this restless, understated beauty (who ironically appeared up just below my lens, but was too fast for me to get then) for 2 minutes from the second floor sunroom, pretty sure that even a long-distance shot would evade my best efforts. However, on its second “lap”, I finally nailed a shot of it perching on a slender branch, just above one of the potted artichoke plants.
why the name “orange-crowned” warbler? I’ve yet to see one with an orange crown!

I know the waiting game for just the right shot. It feels like vindication when it finally pays off. Good job!

When I have a precious photo it sometimes takes me a while to post it. I sort of want to keep it to myself for a while!! 😀

Sure is a nice shot, I notice it was shot at 500m, with flash on. Did the flash fire, what setting would it have been on, did you use a diffuser of any sort?

thank you, Brian! the flash did indeed fire at full strength. subject is quite far away, though … 10-15 feet away on a fairly bright day (no diffuser used). I generally shoot in manual mode (presetting the shutter speed and aperture but letting the camera decide the ISO). When I use the flash in manual mode on my Canon 6D, the ISO is automatically fixed at 400.
