Yellow-Rumped Warbler

This gallery contains 2 photos. A couple of rather noisy, long distance shots of Yellow-Rumped Warblers taken at sunset at Boundary Bay Wildlife Management Area on September 21. This is the Audubon “variety”, with brilliant yellow crown (except in females–of which my subject is one), throat patch, and flanks (we saw the Myrtle variety at Colony Farm and the Maplewood Conservation Area earlier this summer).

It’s rather unflattering to be named after the colour of your posterior, especially when you’re as beautiful a bird as this one is. “Butter butts” sounds so much better, doesn’t it? 🙂 These summertime singers are seldom still, and in the fall, they flock together in large numbers. This is the closest in two summers that I’ve come to photographing these beautiful warblers.

  4. Beautiful birds! I often wonder about that chattiness in terms of evolutionary advantage as it telegraphs to every predator, “Here I am!” Cats must kill thousands every fall. They are reason I decided to keep my cats inside. I didn’t mind them killing rodents, but birds would break my heart every time.

    • I did wonder about that, too. we had a ginger-coloured cat come bounding through the backyard yesterday, and its sudden appearance caused all the birds feeding on the ground to fly for the trees. we hang our birdfeeders to keep cats and squirrels at bay, but we will still have the odd groundfeeder.

    • oh, there are tons of mosquitoes in temperate Vancouver! Boundary Bay is marshy in many places. great for photographing wildlife, not so good for staying unbitten! 🙂 There were quite a few of the butter butts, but this is the only one who would consent to having its photo taken! 🙂

      • I was never without a mosquito bite in my first 8 years in Hong Kong (every photo of me shows at least 5 bites) but I don’t think I was bitten by a mosquito in Vancouver until my 20s (Lighthouse Park…gah!). Nobody in the city proper has screens and doors are always left wide open! 😀

  12. I love these little birds and look forward to their return to the feeders this winter. They love peanut butter! Gorgeous in your golden light.
