This gallery contains 2 photos.Β Two different species of tropical (Costa Rican) free-flying butterflies in the Amazon exhibit. Photographed at the Vancouver Aquarium on July 6. First up: heliconius cydno galanthus, aka, the Cydno Longwing. That curly protrusion is its tongue!
Next up: Heliconius erato, aka the Red Passionflower Butterfly or the Red Postman, looking almost like it’s levitating above the leaf. Butterflies are quite used to humans at Vanaqua, and can be found through the Amazonian exhibit (and outside of it, too).
Very pretty indeed!

they didn’t hang out in the aquarium portion, but we spotted a few in the corridor between the aquarium and the Amazonian exhibit … bold as brass! sadly, though, I saw one being eaten by a Scarlet Ibis π¦ and another was making itself a tail ornament of another Scarlet Ibis!

Guess he was trying to keep his enemy close as he’d seen what had happened to his friend who was eaten eh? π
