Doing a flyby over the Tsawwassen Ferry Causeway at very close range on an early and blustery Friday afternoon was this adult Ring-Billed Gull. I found that the downstroke to be even more dramatic than the upstroke, and it also helps draw the shadows away from the subject’s face.
if this flyer got any closer, I would be getting a blurred bird-in-flight photo!

With the exception of Bonaparte’s Gulls, Mew Gulls, and Ring-Billed Gulls, I’m not good at distinguishing gull species of the Pacific Northwest from a distance. I’m used to seeing Ring-Billed Gulls in the winter, so sighting one in the middle of summer is a bit strange. Photographed on July 17.

Wouldn’t it be lovely to fly free like that? My skydiving got me as close as possible, but you do have to come down! Great photo!

thank you, Noelle! the closest I got to flying like a bird was piloting a single engine prop plane a few years ago!

I’ve considered taking flying lessons, but there’s so much else to do!
