This gallery contains 3 photos. I’ve been waiting to photograph Buffleheads ever since I saw them at Burnaby Lake a few weeks ago. They vie with the Greenwinged Teals for the title of Canada’s littlest diving ducks. With oversized heads on tiny bodies, Buffleheads are the chickadees of the sea.
It’s tough to get up close with Buffleheads, since they don’t tend to flock in large numbers, and keep their distance from humans. This handsome fellow is one of the rare exceptions, and came right up to the edge of the spit.
In addition to being small and cute, the males’ heads iridesce with the colours of the rainbow–even in the weak afternoon sun. Patience is required to get a halfway decent shot of a Bufflehead above water — because they’re almost always diving. Photographed on Christmas Day.

What a handsome and cute ducky 🙂 I’ve never seen this species before, so I learn something new – right up to the end of the year 😉 It must have been a nice ‘Christmas gift’ to capture this moment in time 😀 I also love the name of these ducks: Buffleheads ❤

well … somehow, ‘tennisballhead’ doesn’t roll off the tongue quite as well as ‘bufflehead’ 😀
