Classical Talent Starts Young

Diminutive 15-year-old British soprano singer, artist, and songwriter Georgia Odette has already wowed audiences at home and abroad in 186 countries with her voice, great looks and awesome performances at Stockport Plaza, Buxton Opera House, and Gawsworth Hall.

Classical crossover artists are the new rock stars of this decade. With just a few wholesome exceptions. One: they sound good. No shriekingly discordant voices, no profanity-laced lyrics that need bleeps every five seconds for tender ears. Their notes are pitch perfect, and they can generally hold a range of octaves quite well. Two: they are impeccably and elegantly dressed. Unkempt is not part of their vocabulary. Not a hair is out of place. Being well-groomed and well garbed are indispensable to cultivating and communicating a serious attitude about your craft.

15-year-old British soprano singer Scarlett Quigley has performed as a guest soloist at several charitable events; she has swept many local talent contests and recently claimed the title of Bowdon Festival's young singer of the year in January 2013.

Three: they know how to perform. No twerking, no crotch grabs, no wardrobe malfunctions or other provocative maneuvers on stage. Their voices, their economy of movement in live performances are talent enough with which to engage their audience. Four: these days, they start young. In some cases, before they can even drink or obtain their driver’s licence. Five: they know the importance of practice and dedication. Raw talent needs to be polished at every opportunity with their vocal coaches.

Young British-born Charlotte Hoather is a polymath: in addition to being a soprano singer, she’s also a ballerina, pianist and the holder of a second degree black belt in karate. She sings in the Glasgow based Female Chamber Choir “Les Sirenes” and the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland choir

And six: they use self-promotion via social media platforms like Youtube, FaceBook, Twitter and even WordPress to grow their audience. Gone are the days of getting accidentally discovered by an industry media mogul by being in the right place at the right time, and then securing the professional services of a PR agency to exclusively publicize your musical engagements thereafter. If you want to get discovered, you’ve got to roll up your proverbial sleeves and make it happen yourself.

Aspiring classical crossover artists also share their other interests and community involvements, giving us glimpses of their journeys, every step of the way. To be able to read their chronicles is a one-of-a-kind experience. Here are just a few to watch.
