Closeup of a Christmas Cactus Flower

As its name suggests, Christmas Cactus blooms in the winter, when most other flowers do not–providing a festive and welcome burst of colour during the holiday season. Photographed on November 23.

Colour Me Purple

Winter Begonias

Flowering Currant

If you want to see hummingbirds up close in springtime at the VanDusen Gardens, position yourself close (but not too close) to the flowering currant bush. The nectar of this Pacific Northwest native (which, ironically, I’ve yet to find it in the local nurseries) is irresistibly sweet.

Mediterranean Spurge

Photographed on April 10 at VanDusen Gardens were the hardy euphorbia characias wulfenii growing quite abundantly by the old restaurant entrance to the gardens proper.

Blue Anemone, White Anemones
