Despite its resemblance to a small paper kite and its fire engine red spots and patches, the Cinnabar Moth is very real. As per its Wikipedia profile, it is beneficial in controlling ragwort, and was introduced to North America for that purpose. Photo taken on Gabriola Island (this one is still alive and well, but just having a rest on a concrete floor).

it’s actually the larvae that feed off the ragwort, so if the adult females go on to become mommies, you’re in luck. 🙂

We don’t have much ragwort thankfully and any landowner who has horses by law has to remove it
